Highlights from the Texas Young Democrats convention

The Texas Young Democrats met in Austin for the 2003 annual convention this weekend. Some highlights:

  • Sherry Boyles, who ran for the railroad commission in 2002, gave a powerful speech Saturday about activism, proving once again how effective she can be on the stump.

  • State Rep. Garnet Coleman made some blistering comments in a forum on the future of the Texas Democratic Party on Saturday afternoon. Coleman, who has something of a reputation of a fire-breather, vented frustration at another state representative (who shall go nameless) and urged Democrats to stop "kissing [Speaker of the House] Craddick's mother-fucking ass." The outburst received a standing ovation and was widely considered to be the most refreshing comment of the day.

  • During the business session at the Capitol this morning, Sean Bradley was re-elected president. The conventioners also approved seperate resolutions opposing the war in Iraq as well as supporting the troops. Jim Navarro chaired the convention.

  • The El Paso County Young Democrats and University Democrats/UT El Paso impressed just about everybody, with UTEP club president Mike Apodaca and club treasurer Elizabeth Macias winning best convention delegate awards for their hard work.

The next TYD executive committee meeting will be in Dallas during the last weekend of June.
